A Browser That Works With You …
April 23, 2008
A few years ago, I was look at the different browsers available. I tried Netscape and Opera but it wasn’t a seamless transition and I always seem to go back to using IE. When I tried Firefox it ended up being a prefect match and I still use Firefox as my main browser today. I really enjoyed the tab browsing – these was of course before IE 7. I didn’t have to think about what I was doing, which wasn’t the case with Netscape and Opera. Then with all the possible add-ons to choose from it took my web surfing to a new level.
Well I think my love for Firefox is going to grow with the release of Firefox 3. A big flaw in any browser is the favorites/bookmarks section. It is up to the user to organize their bookmarks so that they will be easily able to find the bookmark at a later date. Which is the whole point of bookmarks in the first.
Now being a web developer I save a lot of bookmarks to archived sites, tutorials, articles and many other things. I try my best to organize them so I will be able to actually find it when I need it later. I haven’t done too bad of a job but I still have A LOT! And some of them still end up going missing. It also takes a lot of cleaning up and re-organizing to keep my folder system working. It ends up being a real chore, sometimes worse then cleaning my desk.
So it was about time for a browser to step up to the plate and admit that they may have over looked how much some of us were really going to be using the bookmarks/favorites. Then supplying use with the proper tools to keep track not only of our bookmarks but previously viewed websites.
I read this article — http://www.dria.org/wordpress/archives/2008/04/22/629/ — about Firefox’s new development to help bookmarking and finding a hell of a lot easier and faster. Hopefully a lot less time re-searching for that website I found about that thing a while back … dammit what was that website again?
I can’t wait for this to come out … I am highly considering getting the beta version myself!!
Soon to come my Metric review!!

That time of the year …
November 7, 2007
Today is going to be about online shopping, more specifically for christmas. I know I know christmas is more than a month away but if you want to do your shopping online this year you better be thinking about it now. I wouldn’t say that I am an online shopping expert but here should be some helpful tips this season.First and foremost online shopping especially for gifts is all about timing. If you want it to arrive on time I would say no less than a month in advance, unless you are willing to spend more money on shipping or risk it arriving late. With that said you only have a few weeks before Nov 25th so you better get thinking about those gifts.
Don’t know what to get people?? Gifts.com is a good site for gift ideas. They also list all the different sites/stores that you can get the ideas from and for how much. They will also keep track of people’s birthday, sending you birthday reminders. You can also save gift ideas for each person and add your own wish list. Great site you should check it out.
You got some ideas on what to get people, now what? If you are going to be doing most of your christmas shopping online consider getting the stuff all from the same site or store. Now normally if someone did this it would sound like they are doing last minute shopping. But some sites offer free shipping if you buy so much. On the other hand you are putting all your eggs in one basket and if they all arrive late you are pretty much gift less, but that is what timing is all about. Luckily now a days you are able to track your packages so you don’t have to be sitting at home bitting your nails. And if you are like me you might even obsess about constantly checking on the where abouts of packages.
With the above in mind you might want to see what the site/store’s return policy is. Do they even let you return things? How long do you have to return things? What if it comes broken or breaks? Do they have a re-stocking fee? Also check what kind of security your credit card offers. If the site/store isn’t willing to help you out, your credit card company may do something about it.
So, if you are doing your shopping online because you think it is easier, think twice. If you want things to go smoothly and not over spend your budget you are going to have to plan things out. You may not have to worry about finding a parking spot or shop in crowded stores with christmas music constantly playing. It might not be worth it if your gifts don’t arrive before christmas.
Other sites to keep in mind this shopping season:
- cnet.com – Offers great electronic reviews. If you are looking at getting someone a mp3 player, camera, cell phone, or other tech gifts head over to this site. They have lots of reviews and most of them even have video reviews from their editors.
- amazon.ca – It’s not just good for online shopping, it is also a good place to check out reviews. Read about what people have to say about products before buying them. If you are going to shopping from amazon remember to check out the seller. See what other people have to say about their service and also read about their return policy and shipping cost.
If you are just trying to avoid traffic, chaotic parking lots, and long lines … most stores have online shopping and you can always return it right to the store if you need to.
